Ethnic Russians constitute about two-thirds of the 2/4 million inhabitants of Crimea. Another twenty percent are Ukrainian. Following Ukrainian independence, the Tatar population started to return and reclaim mosques and establish new mosques and schools. They now constitute 12 percent of the population. There are also Armenian, Greek, German, and Bulgarian comunities.
The new constitution theoretically puts all Crimean languages on par, but in reality Russian is the language seen and heard everywhere, while the Ukrainian and — to a much lesser extent — Tatar languages are taught in school.
